Yes, this is the way I got into my research program. My M.S. work
blended seamlessly over into my PhD work.
I really enjoyed Alex's description, it makes a lot of sense and fits my
experience too - despite the cultural differences between the US and
Europe the basic human ways of making contact are the same.
