Whether or not the popular perception is true depends in great measure on your
supine media, which create the popular perception. So, if your supine media
want to project bleakness, that's what you'll get. Don't blame this bleak
projection on America, because it's entirely the product of your supine media.
Bottom line: why should the US listen to Australian media tell us how much
they don't care?
