Max More has quoted Jeffrey R. Harrow describing plans for an
automated highway. I recall an episode of Beyond 2000 at least five
years ago with an article on the German Autobahn test driving exactly
the same idea. A radar sensor detected the distance between your cars
front bumper and the rear bumper of the car in front. It worked fine.
As far as I know it has been implemented there.
