SETI software reaches new heights
A quarter-million users rack up centuries of computer time By Alan Boyle

May 21 — SETI@home has mushroomed into the world’s largest experiment in distributed computing, just a week after its formal launch. More than a quarter-million people have downloaded the software, which sifts through radio data for messages from alien civilizations. More than 600 years of computer time have been racked up in a week, with a year’s worth contributed by a Michigan Tech network.
