To be fair, I think the argument probably would be that the natural substance
has been used for so long that it is believed to be safe. A new derivative
probably is safe, but needs major testing to be sure. In this sense, it may be
true that a natural substance has more evidence of its safety than a newly
derived derivative. Note that this claim does not apply when the synthetic is
chemically identical to the natural substance.
