I think the word that Thomas Huxley coined was AGNOSTIC, not humanist.

He really did fall for Teilhard, he did write the preface of one of his
books, but it did mention he was skeptical in the preface. What Julian
Huxley liked was the idea of the Noosphere, that there was another layer
of complexity beyond the geosphere and the biosphere, but the
"thinking"sphere.
