Actually, I have heard that pacemaker patients have a life expectancy
that is slightly better than normal people (a likely explanation is of
course that they monitor their cardiovascular system better).

Not when FM wrote that. I think most people would have regarded the
idea of widespread cellular phones as Star Trek sf rather than a
likely extrapolation.
