I had not heard of this idea, yet another excellent one from Zubrin.

Zubrin's Case for Mars is about the most well thought-out
treatment I have ever read on the topic. It has nearly
every good idea, but I was slightly disappointed that he
did not mention using small people, an old favorite
notion of mine. When I discussed it with him in person
he was dismissive of the idea. I never did get him
to recognize that the mass of the entire ship scales
as the cube of the linear dimension of the crew, even if
you assume starting with a shuttle C or shuttle Z, or an
    Ares. spike
