A very well-done site in Denmark about using "soft kill option" methods
to create optimal mechanical structures:
They apply it to MEMS, satelites, phonon bandgap materials, materials with
negative Poisson coefficient, bridges and everything else - and have an
interactive applet where you can try it out for yourself!
The basic idea is to take a domain subjected to forces, calculate where it
needs reinforcing and where it is lightly loaded, and redistribute
material to where it is needed. The results often have a nice organic
style - I like the branching pylons that often result.
