=/= is pretty self-evidently `not equal to', and I don't C why it's clumsy.

In fact, upper-class Englishmen and women propagated more successfully, I
understand, than the poor, whose kids tended to die at a far higher rate.
The upper-class English used the poor to nurture their own offspring, like
cuckoos.
