I originally thought a spring, until I ran into the ending qualification
Of what is the sound... So I think a harmonic, although I don't know
    what
The significance of #11 is....Darkness fits too, as does water....

    1) season is just gone (spring<=>harmonic||water,
    fall<=>twilight<=>darkness)
    2)putting a circle in a square (traversing a circle forms a sinousoidal
wave, which is the basis for a harmonic||water surface tension forms a
perfect circle if placed on a square material, darkness [draw a box,
draw a circle within a box, colour in the border the area of the square
    minus the circle)
3)they can go in from the front or the side (?! I thought spring
originally 'cause you can drop one in from the top, or squish it and
stick it from the side, also fits a harmonic | Water, darkness fit too)
    4) at work, home or takeaway (?! Springs are everywhere? Oscillations
are everywhere? Water, darkness fit too)
5)it can fit into tight space (springs can, certes, so can oscillations
for that matter, so can water, or darkness_
6)bring it anywhere (darkness, water, and harmonic oscillation can be
    made to fit)
7)space(darkness) or the ocean (water), or a periodic wave which can be
    phase shifted to repeat
8)darkness, water and oscillation all fit
9)harmonics fit, so does darkness (bands of destructive interference),
so does water [droplets], the root cause of the colours of the rainbow
10)all three fit, in that they represent fundamental topics in the
science.. Wave theory, lack of energy[darkness], water [interesting
    solvent in chemistry]
    11) have NO idea what the phrase means... Putting the boot ON would
indicate darkness, putting the boot in, could mean stepping into a
    puddle...

Clarification on #11 would be appreciated...a clue on a clue as it
    where....

    Barring #11, I'm particular to oscillations [harmonic/periodic]...
Particularly since the ending phrase "what is the sound" draws a direct
analogy to harmonic frequencies used to construct music...
How that would relating to putting the boot in is beyond me...
