I can't agree with this as a generalisation. Patentability may
depend on non-disclosure prior to getting the patent. And
in 2003, (regardless of whether one likes it or not) some
commercial projects require patents/IP in order to raise the
funding to make them happen. Good people don't work
for nothing for long.

*Sometimes* "first mover" is great. *Sometimes* the first
mover just bleeds on the trail rather than blazing the trail and
the "second but betterers", watch, learn, cut costs and pick
up your pieces. Its horses for courses. Imho ;-).
