This is an important reminder that the freedoms we take for granted are
both fairly recent and fragile. While I share David brin's optimism that
the cult of otherness, individualism and diversity is very strong
(especially after reading Florida's _The Rise of the Creative Class_
which suggests some powerful economic driving forces in this direction)
we cannot expect to keep our freedoms without constantly defending them
and extending them - it is a dynamic situation, not a static victory.
