the thousands of probes being lost on the way would establish a relay,
connected by relatively low volume seismic transmissions. Probably you would
need to develop some really high-temp electronics, maybe with doped diamond
as the main material.
You could safely explode a 20 megaton nuke under some desert, deep enough so
as not to breach the surface. Carting all this iron together would be pretty
expensive, though.
