Still oppose. I don't believe the end result in Iraq is going to be
pretty. Sure, it would be nice if they became a western style
democracy. But I don't believe the majority of the people have the
necessary prior conditions for that to happen. The most likely
outcomes are:
1) long time occupation with attendant costs and dangers;
2) an eventual theocractic state;
3) another "strong man" dictator.
None of those outcomes seems to me to justify the costs and other
negatives directly and indirectly involved in pursuing this course of
action.
The one place where I have some doubt is the somewhat Michavellian
perspective of a true US imperialism desiring a base of operations in
the region and/or ultimate control of the oil (in Saudi Arabia also
eventually by this logic). That always has been the only very like
explanation I saw for our actions. No, I don't consider it at
justification.
