THe "limeys", being sailors, generally used limes that were stored in
unrefrigerated casks. In many cases they were either juiced, or dried,
or tended to ferment while stored below decks, where temperatures could
easily reach 120 degrees or more. However, I think that they got plenty
of C out of their limes.
