So am I the only one here who actually liked Crichton's _Prey_?
Sure, it does for the reputation of nanotech what _Cujo_ did for
dogs, but so what? It's _fiction_, people, and I think most
readers will realize that even if Extropians don't seem to.
The book is fast-moving, tightly edited, engaging, and except
for something of a rushed Hollywood ending is a splendid piece
od prose. It paints a strong, sympathetic hero, and interestingly
ambiguous villains. It gets new ideas out to the public. The
science is just detailed enough to sound plausible without enough
accuracy to spoil the story. It's not quite the level of
_Jurassic Park_, but that's a pretty high bar to set even for
Crichton. Just because it might give a few ignorant folks a bad
impression of technology is no reason to dump on an otherwise
fine novel.
