    I agree with Anders on GOLEM XIII, and for much the same
    reasons. HAL I found most sympathetic, esp. at the movie's
    end as it pleaded for mercy. Egan's characters from
    Diaspora seem very human to me. Moreso even than some
    _human_ characters from his early short stories.

    Uploads and augments don't seem to fall into the category
    of AI to me. They seem a very different type of character
    in fiction than AIs. Yes, I realize that someday reality
    might demonstrate no real distinction. That day hasn't yet
    arrived.

    I have a soft spot in my heart for Wintermute, and another
    for the AI Gods of Orion's Arm. The brutal Zoneminds of
    Reign of Steel make lovely antagonists, and are my
    favorites from role-playing games. Culture Minds aren't
    alien enough to suit me. My all-time favorite AI appeared
    in the television show Blake's Seven: the computer of
    their last ship, Slave.
