    Not necessarily, and yes, scavenge can mean chasing the
    lions and hyenas with flaming branches. Animals won't
    mess with an ape carrying a flame.

    I have a friend who grew up in Africa as a missionary.
    He said that in some places, people still do this today:
    see the lions and hyenas kill something, go out there
    with burning branches, scare off the carnivores, whack out
    the liver and the best steaks, let them have the rest.

    One can see a huge evolutionary advantage to the first
    beast capable of controlling fire.
