"Anthony Comstock" and "The Comstock Act" would be a good key-words to
search on. The Comstock Act made it a federal offense to ship birth control
supplies across state lines. Also look at the history of Connecticut state
politics, were the Comstock Act really spun out of control.

Because of Anthony Comstock and his support from church leaders, there was a
time at which married residents of Connecticut could be arrested for using
condoms in the privacy of their own homes. It is probably safer today to
carry an ounce of marijuana in your pocket than it was to carry a condom in
your pocket in late 19th century Connecticut.
