Mike,
You can find a series of volumes by Allan W. Eckert about the frontier
history of the US. He tells an interesting story about the Quakers.
At the time Pittsburgh was on the wild frontier the Quakers had farms
and towns well inside Pennsylvannia and off the frontier. The frontiersmen
around Pittburgh were mainly Irish according to Mr. Eckart.
When the Indians started making major attacks the Irish frontiersmen
would petition the Pennsylvannia State Legislature for gun powder and shot to
protect themselves. The Quaker dominated legislature would reject the
request as fighting was against their morals.
As the Indians began to penetrate the frontier and threaten into the
interior of the state the legislature would approve funds for protection.
The Irish frontiersmen would then get the material they needed to
fight and protect the Quakers.
