It is intriguing in itself that the Western media see it fit to
report on the fate of what amounts to individual soldiers and that
the situation seems to allow this. I guess I've watched too many
WWII documentaries. Considering the size of the operation, why
would anybody consider losses below the size of, say, a division
to be newsworthy?

I don't know whether American TV has by now shown the footage.
Those POWs appeared to be in good shape physically. They did look
awfully frightened, though. I can't tell whether their captors
have given those kids any particular reason to be scared shitless,
or whether the realization has simply struck home that this whole
thing they're involved in is not quite like a video game.
FWIW, the Iraqi POWs shown on TV looked apprehensive, too.
