           That is sort of the lesson we learned after World War Two. At the
    time there was some military equipment that would have made delightful
    civilian toys (P-51) but when guys started running a cost analysis they found
    it was not to be. LOL
           I finally found the proper combination of words on Google to get some
    information on the Navy's project to develop extremely long range naval guns.
     Apparently we have weapons under development that should give us 50 to 70
    mile range. Here is the site
