I have to state that this mortar device is not German in origin, but
American/Irish. The inventor of the modern submarine, an Irish
immigrant by the name of Holland, developed a steam/air driven
artillery system for his submarines. While he developed his subs for
the US Navy, his dream was to build these subs for the IRA and attack
British military ships in Irish harbors.

This system was tested by the US Navy and found to be accurate to
    ranges of several thousand yards.
