On the contrary, I've been a proponent of hybrid vehicles for a decade
or more. It is pure electric vehicles I have problems with.
Hybrids allow you to have an IC engine that you can boost the power on,
even electronically. The electronic controls are generally set for the
most efficient/cleanest generation of power by the IC engine. A fellow
with an interface can edit these settings to focus on producing more
power. You can also edit the voltage regulation to the generator's
field windings so that they produce more power. Furthermore, you can
replace the electric motors that power the wheels with ones that
produce more torque/hp.
This will result in a hybrid SUV that produces slightly more ozone and
NOx/SOx emissions than the stock hybrid but produces as much power as
your normal big engined SUV. Your fuel economy is slightly less than
the stock hybrid, but this can also be made up for by using catalytic
vaporization devices to embed platinum and rhenium in the cylinder
walls, to boost fuel burning in the engine.
A talented individual can arrange for a switch on the dash to change
from high efficiency to high power settings on the fly.
Now, what I really want is a hybrid with a turbine engine. You want
noise? I'll give you NOISE!!!
