DeLong makes some allusions to facts, but fails to reason them through
because he ignores other facts. For example, he blames market economics
for the failure to distribute food evenly to the worlds population, yet
famines in the last century occured ONLY in countries where governments
committed significant interference in market economies, if not outright
central command control of their economies.

Malnutrition in the US can be shown to occur in areas where governments
exhibit significant tax burdens on the local economy (large cities) to
support socialist patron/client relationships or else are used to
enforce patron/client oligopolistic local economies (appalachia, for
example), neither of which is a free market.

Politician's corruption, and our toleration of it, is more a reflection
of how evenly the benefits of that corruption are distributed. The more
average people that feel that they are benefitting rather than
suffering from political pork, the less there is public outrage at
    their graft.

That nearly half the US population pays no taxes at all, yet receives
thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars annually in benefits,
while the top 10% pay more than 50% of the taxes while receiving
nothing in return is indicative of the drift from a free market to an
odd sort of upside down patron/client socialist/mercantilist economy,
where the productive class is enslaved by the political elites to
subsidize the payoffs to the unproductive class that extorts the
payoffs under theoretical threat of electoral revolt...
