You are right in that the world has changed since any date you pick in
the past and will no doubt continue to do so into the future.
But the basic systems haven't changed that much. Totalitarianism
existed long before the socialists of various stripes.
According to the book The Lucifer Principal all the normal human
crimes extend back into the animal kingdom. They murder, steal, rob and
everything we do.
Even if in a decade, a century, or a millennium from now we have a
totally capitalistic society there will always be someone trying to gain an
advantage -- and some of them will succeed from time to time for one duration
or another. Someone will always be trying to outlaw guns, laser weapons,
etc., so only people they approve of will be the ones with weapons.
