Its tricky to answer a question like this and get the hope and
hype balance correct.
Cloned or stem-cell grown kidneys for humans are *not*
available yet as therapeutic products. .
In terms of the state of the art in R&D this is leading edge
or even slightly in front of leading edge.
Stem cell and nanoparticle technologies that will provide the
scaffolding are converging quickly in this area. I attended a
meet on Nanoparticles in biology in Melbourne on Friday.
Elsewhere I think I recall reading/hearing of some "preliminary"
work being down with animal models on organs like the kidney
and maybe the pancreas.
My guestimate for kidney availability in humans: best case 3 years
(*very* unlikely) worst case 20 years. Likely case 5 -12 yrs.
This guestimate could be tightened up by a literature review. I'm
reluctant to pretend more knowledge than I actually have or to
leave this question begging.
Perhaps others may already have links and/or research groups
handy?
If not I can probably source more detail for more detailed
questions.
