Mez,
In one sense you have a point and I will be the first to say so.
However you miss what I think is the relevant point -- in the Moslem world
there are no democratic countries unless it would be Turkey and I don't know
about Turkey. So if the US wants to work with the Moslem people as so many
urge us to do we have a choice of two kinds of people to work with:
1. Dictators and sometimes brutal ones.
2. Moslem clergy that are sometimes brutal by our standards.
So, if we withdraw you could very easily castigate us for not trying
to improve the lot of the Moslem poor. If we stay and try to help you can
castigate us for dealing with brutal rulers. In the two countries you have
mentioned we have tried to stay and help so you castigate us over the
governments we are forced to work with if we wish to help the people. It
isn't easy being Uncle Sugar. <G>
