Berlusconi was and is still trying to fill the gap between US/UK and
EU and UN. He also established a specific good relationship with Lybia,
because there is a very small probability that 'Saddam' ('misfortune'
in a local dialect) may, at last, accept the exile (there).

Unfortunately France, Germany, Russia are now playing a different drum.

The general opinion here is that nobody has shown Saddam's smoking
gun. But, imo, Italians still prefer Berlusconi's politics and do
not like French & German politics.

Somebody noticed that our former government (leftist) showed a much
stronger determination pro US, pro UK, pro NATO, and against Milosevich,
    during that war.

This is perfectly true. But the reason resides in the peculiar
efficiency (sometimes hypocrisy) of our leftist parties, depending on
whether they are in power or not.
