This is really a coincidence, Terry - I just started reading that book
this past weekend. I got up to Chapter 4 before I got side-tracked
reading Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (free, online, and chock full
of >h memes).
The first couple chapters gave me a good grasp of how the world
financial institutions were established and what their main purposes
are. It seems like a lot of the world is still living in post-WWII
terms instead of new-millennium terms, and I wonder what the shake-up
will be that will shift their thinking. The current situation in Iraq
is certainly having an interesting political effect, but how it's
affecting organizations like the IMF, World Bank and WTO is less
obvious to the casual observer.
It's worth pointing out that Stiglitz comes from the World Bank and
presents a pretty polarized view of "World Bank (generally) good, IMF
bad". He details why, of course, but I'm left wondering if there's
another side to the story that's not being presented. I will continue
to read through the book and will blog my thoughts on it when I finish.
This book is also a nice complement to De Soto's book The Mystery of
Capital - which is the last book I read. I should take the opportunity
to thank the group for being my unknowing, surrogate professors and
reading-material advisors in my own personal studies. All the
political banter gets overwhelming, but the list still has value to me.
:)
Cheers!

PS - ooooh! and I can't wait to meet the handful of you who will be at
the NYTA symposium and the larger group of you that will be attending
Transvision this summer!
