    Avatar,

This technique (embedding humans in emergency storage mechanisms) is a
prominent feature of "Deception Well" a novel by Linda Nagata. The book
is a prequel to "Vast", and though "Vast" is a better novel overall,
"Deception Well" describes the same imaginary universe from a slightly
    different angle. Worth a look.

As for M.J. - I just happened to catch that part of the program, and it
gave me a real charge to hear him answer the way he did. Let the meme
spread wide! I'm not worried about M.J. being a spokesperson for this
meme... living forever is *way bigger* than M.J.
