Xupiter happened to me. I picked it up, without knowing, without any pop up
or approval what so ever. I don't even know which site threw it at me. I
noticed it when I hit a 404 error at website, I saw the usual page, but
then my computer would freeze, I was unable to use my mouse (this made it
impossible to just hit 'back' or click the main url for the error page)
while I was forwarded to a Xupiter search site, and a pop window for ads
would load as well. Drove me crazy, sitting there forced to wait for a page
I didn't even want, and yes, it took over my homepage. Inside of the toolbar
of IE, I right clicked on the right side of my toolbar (largest gray area
where you see your address buttons, standard and links) and I could see
Xupiter there. I had already installed a Google toolbar
(http://toolbar.google.com/) and when I pulled the Google down with my
curser, I could see a whole row of Xupiter hiding there. I thought at first
Google had been hijacked by Xupiter. This would have been disappointing
since I like the Google toolbar, no matter where you are online you can do a
search and have the results open in a different window (if you tell it to),
this avoids closing the window I am in to go to my desk top and load another
IE browser for a search everytime. It saves what I am doing and lets me
search at the same time. Anyway, I uninstalled, and reinstalled the Google
toolbar (twice), nope, Xupiter was still there. I could locate the Xupiter
folder on my C drive, but couldn't remove it because of shared dll's. It
wasn't in my start/programs or in my remove programs control panel. I did a
search online, and downloaded Adware from Lavasoft, I ran the program, and
it didn't find Xupiter. I went to the Xupiter site itself, and downloaded a
removal tool http://www.xupiter.com/uninstall.html. I ran it and it took the
toolbar away, removing all functions. However, I did notice a Xupiter folder
still sitting in my C drive/program files (not the start menu program files,
but in "my computer") Xupiter/updates/dll after the uninstall, so I manually
trashed it.
