I have no idea if any of you are familiar with Larry Bond's earlier works,
but if you are there are some striking parallels to his book Cauldron. It
involves the alliance of France and Germany (for reasons too complicated and
honestly, far-fetched to get into), squaring off against them are the US,
UK, and their new, staunch allies, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
At the time I read it (98?), the entire idea of even the current divisions
between Fr and Gr and the rest of Europe and the US seemed absurd.
Some of Bond's stuff is eerily prophetic; his book The Enemy Within, about
terrorism on US soil, can double as a manual on the techniques and tactics
one should use if attempting to destroy a first world nation by turning it's
various social elements on each other. Scary stuff, and well worth a read.
