Every article I've seen says that Schroeder's re-election is owed to his
opposing the war on Iraq. His support is low now, but because of the economy
and his apparently powerlessness (possibly a function of the German federal
system.)

When they think we'll look out for own interests without consideration of
anyone else, yes, that is frightening. We have words for people who think
only about their own interests and have much more power than others.
