AFAIK, we spent the most of the difference for our social systems.
But there are significant achievements in space technology. Ariane is
AFAIK the most economical launch vehicle today. The Spacelab, the second
Ariane unit and the Columbus lab for the ISS is build in Bremen/Germany,
right where I live :-)
How much of the US amount for space is real progress, and how much is
keeping the old shuttles working?

I found statements in different directions. While Handelsblatt[1] said in
November that EU pays more to their farmers than the US, ZDF[2] wrote in
August that the EU pays 14,000 US$/farmer but the US 20,000 US$/farmer.
