As you may know, this Sunday we Yanks will be
viewing a sporting event which promises to be
a most exciting contest. I have been eagerly
anticipating this event for some time. I am
referring of course to Sunday's chess match
between the current reigning software, Deep
Junior, and the highest rated human, Gary
Kasparov.
The carbon unit will be playing against
commercially available software running
on a workstation-class computer, stuff we
ordinary proles could have in our homes if
we so chose to spend our modest incomes in
that way.
I would speculate on the outcome, however
I have been so wrong so many times I will
refrain. You will recall in November the
current human world champion Kramnik (about
5 Elo rating points below Kasparov) played to
a fighting 4 to 4 draw against the program
Deep Fritz, much to my utter amazement.
I am going in with high hopes this time.
Go Junior! {8-]
