According to Drs. Michael and Mary Ann Eades, all modern humans are at
risk of retaining too much iron. Early humans of the Paleolithic era
were riddled with parasites, bacteria, viruses and fungi, all of which
need plenty of iron to survive. As a consequence humans evolved the
capacity to store and hide iron. Unfortunately the human genome does not
yet know about the miracles of modern medicine. As a result we tend to
accumulate too much iron.
It's notable that epidemiological studies show that blood donors live
longer than non-donors.
