Those of you leaning towards genetic/aging science might want
to read this article:
With Worm Experiments, Scientists Turn Off Genes (AP)
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/15/science/15WEB_WORM.html?pagewanted=print
It documents how scientists have identified hundreds of genes
inovlved in fat metabolism using a technique known as "RNA interference".
I will not go into the details of this unless people want to know them
(offlist) -- suffice to say that the method results in at least an order
of magnitude, perhaps as much as 2-3 orders of magnitude increase in
the rate of identification of the gross roles of "unknown" genes. That
is quite a significant speedup.
