One of the interesting questions with respect to the longevity
of civilizations is whether or not star lifting is feasible
(see Criswell, D.R. in Finney & Jones, 1985) so one can lengthen
the longevity of ones parent star into the trillions of years
realm. There have been suggestions that star lifting might
make the parent star unstable (resulting in the probable
destruction of a solar system and any civilizations therein).
New astronomical evidence suggests that star lifting can be
done in a stable fashion, at least if you use a white dwarf
to do the lifting.
