It appears the term has expanded over the years to include
hydrocarbons, methane, and whatever else is seeping from the seafloor
that is not hot.

If you ever take walk along a beach around Santa Barbara, CA, USA --
and countless other places around the world -- you may find globs of
crude oil rolling in the surf. This usually is derived from nearby,
offshore seeps of oil. A "natural" oil spill of sorts.
Note: I am a geologist, but not a petroleum geologist.
