Erm... This is a little like saying:
< the next evolutionary development of the novel beyond current (Danielle
Steele, Harold Robbins, etc) literature >
Current space opera is exemplified by Iain M. Banks, Paul McAuley, Alastair
Reynolds, Charles Stross, Vernor Vinge. Maybe the cooperative construction
of a space opera megatext/encyclopaedia like Orion's Arm is an advance of a
kind, but the competition is a bit steeper than weary dumbed-down replays of
1930s-1950s pulp.
