We know quite well about what regions are involved at the lower levels,
according to Henrik there is a group of nuclei in the brainstem that
regulate sleep and activate dreaming. They do such things as cut off
sensory input and motor output, and send out the PNO-wave
(Pontine-something-Occipital wave) that activate the cortex. If there is
any interest, I'll try to force him to tell me more...
