The WP reports the fuel would have possibly been ignited by the
missile hitting the fuel tank, even though it lacked a warhead.

TidBit: This story was minor, buried inside. The news last night
discounted the missile theory on the grounds that the plane was out
of range of shoulder-fired missiles(?!?!?).
