As I learned it, marijuana is classed as a mild hallucinogen. Hallucinations are not necessarily a matter of seeing objects that aren't there, they can include more subtle effects like making things appear differently or changing how they are perceived. The earlier message talking about interpreting things as familiar faces would be a good example.
Alcohol on the other hand is considered a depressant, although in high doses I think it can cause hallucinations at least in some people.
