Whatever Einstein was, he was never a schmuck. "Religion without science is blind, and science without religion is lame". I would say that the utility of God is to promote scientific evolution to the resolution of suffering and yes, the search for extra-terrestrial intelligences--as looney as that may be.

The funny thing is, if one extrapolates technology out far enough(time-wise) in a speculative sense, in a David Deutsch/Max Tegmark kind of way; the religious loons may be sort of correct. Wasn't it Jon Donne who said "A man's reach exceeds his grasp, or whats a heaven for?"
