Anders, you devil you, what an interesting question.

Genes are hardware (at least in this computer simulation) Memes are software (virtual-hardware, soft-hardware?) What is virtual-software, soft-software?

I'd have to cast one vote for that age-old nemesis of the computer software industry: vaporware!

It has to be something that you think you have to have and although it never arrives, it has a demonstrable effect on the things around it.

Another possibility would be a self-modifying programs that replicate which sounds a lot like ALife.

However I'm not really satisfied with either of these ideas. This needs more development.
