Evolution has nothing to do with it. It is typical of those who oppose the death penalty to suggest those of us who support it are a group of single eyebrowed, brow ridged, neanderthal's. We simply find the crime of murder intolerable.

I oppose the electric chair, the gas chamber, and hanging, on the grounds there is no need to be brutal.

Ahimsa, is a wonderful idea, but has it's exceptions in my book.
