If Tipler is correct, and I think he probably is, then opening a closed
universe, even if it were possible, would be the last thing life would want
to do because only a closed universe offers the possibility of immortality.
Given the fact that, at least right now, there is more experimental evidence
for it being open than closed a more relevant question is "If the universe is
open is there any way we can make it closed?". I'm not sure of the answer to
that question but I rather doubt it, if so then eventually this party must
end, and not with a bang but with a whimper.
