Re: spoiling the fun with explanations, a horrid thought

I wonder if the Star Wars universe are trans-jedis, who seek to boost
their force by midichlorian transplants?

Another problem with midichlorian-like explanations is that once things
have been moved into the explained world people will start to think of
*uses* for them, which would enable all sorts of unexpected and often
(storywise) unwanted things. Why are terrorists in Traveller not using
their nuclear starship as relativistic missiles against the Emperor (an
idea that came up long before 911)? If wizards can communicate with
crystal balls, why doesn't the king set up a wizard telegraph service?
And so on.
